We’ve just got back from a long weekend to Luxembourg! We went not knowing very much about the city or even the country but during our visit we found out some really cool facts. The city is built on an outcrop of rock and was fortified over the centuries to become what was known as ‘the Gibraltar of the north’. We also loved the aesthetic of the city, with a really creative blend of old and new, the city has both ancient fortifications and glass skyscrapers!
We started our trip by arriving Thursday evening, giving us just enough time to check into our hotel before heading out to have dinner in the city center (like classic British people we just fancied pizza!).
On Friday morning we joined a local tour guide for a walking tour of the center and learnt all about the city’s history and reasons behind the impressive fortifications, part of which are a UNESCO site. In the afternoon we had some free wandering time so we took the opportunity to do some of the things our tour guide had suggested, such as the panoramic lift down to the valley.
We started Saturday off with a short walk along the floor of the valley, alongside the river. After this we met our hop on hop off bus which was a full days activity to visit several castles and some picturesque spots in the countryside. As well as meeting some interesting international people on the tour, we got to learn about the history of region and the smaller towns on the route.
As our flight on Sunday wasn’t until the evening, we had time to do some last minute sightseeing. However, the weather was pretty chilly (it was snowing on and off!), so we did mostly indoor sightseeing, such as visiting Luxembourg Notre-Dame Cathedral and going to a local chocolatier.
