Hello from Frankfurt! This trip abroad was a little different from our usual travel style as my dad came with us. Despite the difference in our ages, we still managed to put together an itinerary to suit us all.
After staying over in Stansted, we started very early on Thursday to catch our plane. Dad had a bit of a kerfuffle, when he had to pay extra to check his bag, but a near empty plane meant for a calm, stress free flight. After landing, we took a shuttle into town and each found a lunch option that suited us at the food hall in the train station. Then it was time for some exploration by foot before checking into our accommodation and relaxing, ready for sightseeing the next day.
On our second day we started our exploration of the city in the drizzling rain, taking shelter in the Cathedral at one point. We also got to see inside the imperial hall and look at all the portraits of the countries monarchs and rulers. Then, on the recommendation from the tourist information, we headed to the indoor market, a perfect rainy day activity. After sampling lots of the market goods, we finally decided on what to have for lunch. For the afternoon, me and Will went to the zoo and enjoyed the quiet atmosphere due to all the rain.
Saturday was spent visiting Dad's friends in Würzburg. This was a perfect day trip from Frankfurt as it was only an hour by train. When we got there we explored the river bank shops and restaurants, and the Alte Mainbrücke, before having lunch by the river Main. In the afternoon we headed into the center to walk around the Würzburg Residence gardens and spend some time in the churches of the city. We liked how both the Cathedral and the New Munster were reconstructed after the war with an interesting mix of original and modern features. Würzburg is a really beautiful city and well worth a visit! Then it was back to the station for our train to Frankfurt.
For Sundays activities we got a hop-on hop-off bus pass, perfect for the wet weather. Our first stop was at the Main Tower, where we admired the views of the city from the panoramic observation deck. We next hopped off at the Palm Gardens. The numerous green houses were all themed with different climate plants and trees and we enjoyed exploring the desert pods the best. After a very late lunch and an afternoon nap for some of us (Will is too cool for naps), we headed out to a traditional bar to try the local apple wine with cheese.
Monday started with a relaxing and informative boat tour along the river Main. We then headed into town for some lunch, sandwiches and salads all round. After lunch we went on a walking tour of the old town and discovered that the buildings there are actually only 6 years old, the newest old town we've ever visited! Traditional German dishes for dinner rounded off our last day perfectly.
