Greetings from Bangkok! We were pleased to arrive on Wednesday as planned, as we encountered a slight hiccup in Frankfurt with our flights. Our connecting flight in Jeddah was cancelled, so we were faced with a daunting 13-hour layover before the next flight. Thanks to the mega efforts of a lady at the airline help desk in Frankfurt, we managed to secure an earlier connecting flight, leaving us just enough time to enjoy a McFlurry at the Saudi airport. Then we were back on track and heading for Bangkok! Landing in the late afternoon gave us enough time to check-in to our hostel before heading out to grab a bite to eat for dinner, our first taste of Thai food (a bit spicy for me!).
Thursday we decided to take at a more leisurely pace, as we were recovering from our long travel of day before. Our first stop was the iconic Grand Palace, where we admired the Emerald Buddha temple and wandered through the palace grounds. After lunch we visited the aquarium, indulging my not-so-secret obsession with fish, before we retreated to our hostel to recharge.
Friday unfolded at a similarly relaxed tempo, beginning with a visit to The National Memorial, where we learnt about Thailand's history and its evolution through the ages. For lunch, I finally managed to find a Thai dish that wasn't too spicy for me! In the evening we joined an e-scooter tour. We especially enjoyed zooming around the backstreets and seeing the temples and markets at night. Our tour guide gave us lots of interesting snacks to taste and Will was even brave enough to try the crickets and worms!
On Saturday we ventured beyond the city on an organised day trip to Ayutthaya, where we discovered the history of the King's Summer Palace and explored ancient temples. This was our hottest day yet at 41° and 89% humidity! We struggled a bit in the heat but Will discovered the joy of having an umbrella in the sun and borrowed one at almost all the temples we visited. I think he looked very stylish amongst all the ruins.
After the previous day of intense heat, we decided we needed a day of relaxation and rejuvenation on Sunday. We started with some laundry (we were both nearly out of clean clothes by this point!) and did some preparations for the next stop on our Southeast Asia tour. After lunch we had our first Thai massage and were surprised by the strength of the petite looking Thai masseuses!
We were sad to pack up and say goodbye to our Bangkok hostel today, but are looking forward to the next step of our trip. Chiang Mai here we come!
