On Wednesday we made it to Denpasar for our long awaited Bali trip! After waiting around in Heathrow for 6 hours for our original flight on Tuesday, we were rerouted and had to get a flight the next day instead. We did get a free overnight stay in a Hilton Garden Inn with dinner and breakfast thrown in though! Charis had 5 chocolate croissants for breakfast (Apparently she’s ”Bulking for Bali”)… We then persevered through a 13 hour flight (brutal) to Kuala Lumpur and 3 more hours onto Denpasar. Travel issues included: significant travel sickness from one group member (Charis is such a loser) and the loss of one of the five check in bags (Danny would like to personally thank Swiss Air for giving him a mental breakdown). Other than that though, we arrived happy and healthy!
Our first day just consisted of finding our Airbnb after landing and checking out a local restaurant for dinner (banging prawn crackers if I do say so). After a tiring travel we just had a very chill evening and played cards with a pack we picked up during our very extensive exploration of Heathrow airport (I won both games of Colorado because I’m a champion)! We also found the local supermarket for the rest of the week because cheap home cooked meals are our friend (once a student always a student)!
Day two involved a long lie in from most group members and a relaxed morning. We had a wander down the local high street; Seminyak neighbourhood has everything from tourist shops to Aussie bars to fish spas! Our evening activity was a sunset hike up Mount Batur, one of the islands active volcanoes. The hike took 4.5 hours but the views and the monkey encounter was definitely worth it (Danny almost cried, it was very emotional). Tom (My brother) is the one giving water to the monkey in the picture. We ended the day at a Balinese karaoke bar for dinner.
Day three involved another long lie in! A relaxed morning left not much time to explore, so we decided to visit Tanah Lot Temple as it was relatively close. We admired the seaside temple and went rock-pooling. For dinner, we walked down to the beach by our accommodation and sat outside listening to live music and watching the sea whilst we ate.
You’ll be pleased to hear day 4 did not start with yet another long lie in! We were up early to catch the best waves down at the beach. We had a surfing lesson from a local company and by the end we were all pros! We plan to go back to the beach restaurant tonight for dinner to enjoy the music and casual atmosphere. I ate so much sea water!
Tomorrow we will be heading up to the north of the island to Lovina where we can get settled into the hostel, ready to start our project on Monday. We expect a long journey as it takes forever to get out of Denpasar by car (the traffic is a nightmare)!
