After a tough term of uni we decided to start our winter break with a long weekend away in Amsterdam!
On our first day we rented bikes and cycled to the windmills on the outskirts of Amsterdam (and got very soggy in the rain!). We also managed to get tickets to the Anne Frank House for the evening which Charis was really excited about and was worth the time spent queuing online for them. We also discovered that the Dutch only really have one traditional dish and it’s basically meat and veg mashed in a pot. Large portions and minimal effort (my kind of food).
The next day, Sunday, was our day trip to Den Haag (The Hague for us Brits), where we took a walking tour and did a spot of Christmas shopping. We were also able to walk around the Christmas market and try some Dutch pastries (Charis loves Christmas markets and pastries so she was twice as excited as usual).
On Monday we did another walking tour (the more you walk the more pastry you can eat)! This time around Amsterdam and we learnt lots of interesting facts about the city’s history and culture. Our favourite fact was that 12,000 bikes end up in the canals each year and the government simply fish them out and sell them back to the locals! Sadly, Charis didn’t end up in the canal like the bikes (trust me I tried). We also visited Vondelpark, the red light district (two very different vibes!).
Our last morning was spent on a boat owned by Captain Dave, a very friendly Dutch man who does canal tours unreasonably early in the morning (he loved telling us about the time he interviewed Gregg Wallace)!
We found Amsterdam was a really accepting and safe city and we love the vibe. Sadly, it’s too expensive for us poor students to stay longer than a weekend!
